How the translation and distribution of the books in this library comply with local and international copyright law.

In line with the law
Every book in this library is translated and distributed in line with local and international copyright law:
- Kosovo: Law No. 08/L-205 on Copyright and Related Rights (2023). A literary work is protected for the author’s whole life and 70 years after their death.
- Albania: Law No. 35/2016 on Copyright and Other Related Rights, with the same term of 70 years after the author’s death.
- Internationally: the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works sets a minimum term of 50 years after the author’s death. The European Union and many other countries apply 70 years.
After that term, a work enters the public domain: it may be freely translated, published and shared, without permission and without payment.
Public-domain works only
We only publish works whose authors died more than 70 years ago, which is the longest common term. This means the works we publish are in the public domain in Kosovo, in Albania, in the European Union and in most countries of the world.
This rule doesn’t rely on our care alone: the system that builds the site automatically refuses to publish a book if its author died less than 71 years ago. Each book’s page shows the author’s years of birth and death.
Translated from the original text
Every translation is made directly from the original text, in an edition that is itself in the public domain (for example, the editions in the Project Gutenberg archive). We do not use, copy or adapt existing translations, in Albanian or any other language, that are protected by copyright. Each book’s page names its source edition, with a link to the original text.
The licence of our translations
The original text is free, but the Albanian translation is new work. Our translations are published under the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 licence, unless a book’s page says otherwise. This means you may share and adapt them freely, on three conditions:
- Attribution: credit the translator and this library.
- Non-commercial: don’t use them to make a profit.
- Share alike: any adapted version is shared under the same licence.
If you notice a problem
If you think a work here should not have been published, or that a text infringes someone’s rights, please write to us straight away from the Contact page. We will look into it as a priority and, if necessary, remove the book.
